Internally-Grooved Condenser Tubing: What You Gain, What You Pay For
Grooved tube improves heat transfer in shell-and-tube condensers and evaporators, but it's not a free upgrade. Here's the trade-off to check before you spec it.

- Internally-grooved tube transfers heat better than plain tube in shell-and-tube condensers and evaporators. The grooves increase turbulence and contact between the fluid and the tube wall.
- That gain has a cost. Grooved tube typically increases flow-side pressure drop compared with plain tube. More pressure drop means the pump or fan has to work harder to push the same flow through.
- Don't treat grooved tube as a free upgrade. Before you spec it, check what the extra pressure drop does to your pump or fan duty point. A heat-transfer gain that forces a bigger pump can cancel out the energy you were trying to save.
Tracking approach temperatures and condenser or evaporator efficiency over time, not just at commissioning, shows whether the trade-off continues to pay off.
