Internally-Grooved Condenser Tubing: What You Gain, What You Pay For

Grooved tube improves heat transfer in shell-and-tube condensers and evaporators, but it's not a free upgrade. Here's the trade-off to check before you spec it.

condenser tubes
  1. Internally-grooved tube transfers heat better than plain tube in shell-and-tube condensers and evaporators. The grooves increase turbulence and contact between the fluid and the tube wall.
  2. That gain has a cost. Grooved tube typically increases flow-side pressure drop compared with plain tube. More pressure drop means the pump or fan has to work harder to push the same flow through.
  3. Don't treat grooved tube as a free upgrade. Before you spec it, check what the extra pressure drop does to your pump or fan duty point. A heat-transfer gain that forces a bigger pump can cancel out the energy you were trying to save.

Tracking approach temperatures and condenser or evaporator efficiency over time, not just at commissioning, shows whether the trade-off continues to pay off.
